Accountability Is Not

For a lot of Nigerians, accountability is almost non-existent in our personal lives, society and government. From the employee who devises means to siphon company’s funds, to the one who takes a bribe to permit a person to jump a queue as well as the one who gives the bribe to evade waiting patiently in line. Or is it the person behind the wheel who runs a red light because he/she is in a hurry, or the driver who disregards road signs and traffic rules; or those in public office who betray the trust and confidence placed in them to occupy such posts, and instead exploit their positions for their own personal gain to the detriment of their responsibilities.
Unfortunately, these acts of self-centeredness create a ripple effect. When people live for themselves, focusing on their own best interests with little or no willingness to accept responsibility for their actions and how they affect others, the resulting moral decay contaminates the entire nation and hinders its progress.

Accountability Is

The Webster dictionary defines accountability as the quality or state of being accountable; especially willingness to accept responsibility or to give account for one’s actions. It is answerability, blameworthiness and the expectation of account-giving.
It can also be defined as the obligation of power-holders to account for or take responsibility for their actions. Power-holders refers to those who hold political, financial or other forms of power and include officials in government private corporations, international financial institutions and civil society organizations (CSO). This is social accountability.
For a society to endure, it needs leaders who are not only prudent and well-versed citizens, but also leaders who realize and understand that they are responsible for the state of the nation and her citizens, and as such, have to be careful with whatever actions or decisions they take.
Since leaders emerge from citizens, the orientation on accountability should start with the citizenry. How can we demand social responsibility from our government if we ourselvesare  not accountable, nor understand what it means to be accountable?
We need to first focus on achieving personal accountability that will then enable us to embrace and operationalize social accountability.

The Accountability Movement

The vision of this movement is to awaken a desire for accountability in the lives of every Nigerian citizen and to gradually develop a greater sense of integrity amongst Nigerians. Living a life of accountability is synonymous with living a life of high integrity to oneself and to one’s creator.
We envisage that by the year 2030 at least one million Nigerians will be fully dedicated to this vision, i.e., citizens committed to living accountable lifestyles and proudly wearing the Accountability Badge.

Every week, we publish a newsletter called the Accountability Encourager, with the hope of keeping you fully aware of various developments and stories on accountability, as well as inspire and motivate you to continue to embrace accountability.
